What is misoprostol?
Misoprostol is a prescription medication that works by causing the uterus to contract and the cervix to soften and open. These effects cause the uterus to empty, which is how misoprostol ends an early pregnancy.
Misoprostol is widely used in reproductive healthcare and can be prescribed for medication abortion on its own, without mifepristone. A misoprostol-only regimen may be somewhat less effective than a regimen that combines both medications; your provider can discuss whether this option is appropriate for you.
What medication may patients receive?
If approved by an independent licensed healthcare provider, a participating licensed pharmacy may dispense a supply of 20 misoprostol tablets.
The prescribing provider determines the appropriate dosing instructions for each patient. Do not assume you must take all 20 tablets. Take the medication only as directed by your prescribing provider and the pharmacy label.
What should patients expect?
